Beth snaps at him to give her the mic back, but he ignores her and lambastes Back Story for being a "sleazy, junk-a-thon news magazine" that goes out of its way to ruin people's lives on national TV. He marches toward Brenda and yanks away the microphone she's talking into. Suddenly, Steve notices a Back Story badge and becomes enraged. Steve and Kelly observe Brenda as she's interviewed by Beth. They all stare at her mutely until Brenda finally volunteers. She tells them she's from KTMB TV, and asks if any of them would like to talk on camera about the pressures of preparing for the college entrance exam. After the course ends, the teens are approached by a reporter named Beth Nielson. He recommends a four step process: scan, discard, select, move on. Brenda, Donna, Kelly, David, and Steve are attending a review course on the SAT, listening with rapt attention as the instructor offers helpful tips and strategies on how to take the test and work through the questions. The Orville: New Horizons - “Midnight Blue” – Episode 308 - Kelly and Bortus are assigned to a mission that takes them to Heveena’s sanctuary world. There is no need for a B or C-plot, because the main story is compelling enough. The colony of Moclan women who live by Dolly Parton’s teachings, the epic rescue mission to save Topa, and the final act in which the Moclans face consequences for their actions are each master strokes. Related The Orville Review: Shadow Realms (Season 3 Episode 2) With no edits, it would’ve aired as a two-parter. “Midnight Blue” is a great episode, but it’s the length of two network episodes. In that same vein, there’s only one major disadvantage: the episodes are too long. There are some tremendous advantages to being on Hulu and off FOX. Beyond the references to modern politics and global affairs - there’s an epic rescue tale. “Midnight Blue” is the best kind of story that The Orvilletells because it has socio-political undertones, but works on two levels. It tells the story of Topa being kidnapped by her own kind and used as a pawn to create a prejudicially motivated conflict. On The OrvilleSeason 3 Episode 8, “Midnight Blue,” is the best kind of Orville tale. Some of these metaphors are direct, and some less so. Much like Star Trek before it, The Orvillemakes astute observations about the present by imagining a better future. The Orvilleoften addresses a modern issue through direct metaphors.
